The painting disappeared from a room with one door, two cameras, and Luca Arden standing six feet away.
At 12:03 a.m., Celeste Vale stopped the auction without raising her voice. Forty wealthy guests looked toward her. She looked only at Luca.
“Seal the gallery,” she said.
He checked the feeds. Both cameras showed the painting still hanging inside the locked room. The wall in front of him showed an empty frame.
“The recording is looped.”
“Obviously.” Celeste’s black-gloved hand closed around the key to the security office. “The interesting question is why you failed to notice.”
Luca had protected diplomats, witnesses, and men who confused money with invulnerability. None had examined him with such cool precision.
“Fire me after I recover it.”
“No.”
The single word struck harder than anger.
Celeste led him into her private study and placed a slim card on the desk. Three rules were written in red ink.
You answer immediately. You do not improvise alone. You tell me when fear changes your judgment.
Below them: Either person may end this arrangement at any time. Professional decisions remain Luca’s. Intimacy requires a separate yes.
“You want operational control,” he said.
“For one night. Someone inside this house knows your habits. If you keep performing independence, they will keep predicting you.”
“And if I refuse?”
“I still pay you. I still help clear your name. But you do it without the advantage of me.”
She offered no threat, which made the choice entirely his.
Luca signed.
Celeste removed his earpiece and replaced it with her own. Her fingertips brushed the line beneath his ear—brief, deliberate, impossible to mistake for an accident.
“First directive,” she said. “Kneel and look beneath my desk.”
He held her gaze for one charged second, then lowered himself onto one knee.
Taped under the desk was a second red card.
HE WILL OBEY YOU BEFORE DAWN.
Celeste read it over his shoulder.
“The thief knows about the rules,” Luca said.
“No.” Her voice softened, becoming more dangerous. “The thief wrote them first.”
